PDE Vision

ASPAN has an ethical obligation to develop and disseminate perianesthesia data elements to the global nursing community and to create the framework for which Perianesthesia Data Elements can be used by clinicians, regulatory agencies, and vendors.

Background

ASPAN launched the Data Elements Strategic Work Team (SWT) in 2004. The original SWT included members Denise O'Brien, Barbara Godden, Karen Cannon, Terry Clifford, Dolly Ireland, Dina Krenzischek, Myrna Mamaril, Susan Russell, Nancy Saufl and Pam Windle.

The initial vision of the PDE SWT was "to create a comprehensive dictionary that includes critical data elements for perianesthesia nursing documentation." The PDE's first goal was that "ASPAN will be the primary source of research and evidence-based perianesthesia clinical documentation standards."

The future of PDE includes continued development and testing of the outcome/goal statements to include and validate actual terminology "data" used in perianesthesia practice. In 2006, ASPAN granted permanent committee status of the Perianesthesia Data Elements SWT. Work on the PDE continues with development of the discrete data elements, testing of the data elements, education, products including a PDE Manual, and additional materials to be made available in early 2009.
