Professional Experience: 

 

Michelle is a Registered Nurse/Relief Charge Nurse with Saint Francis Hospital PACU in Tulsa, OK.  She has been active in ASPAN committees including Governmental Affairs and Membership/Marketing.  She is a 2006 ASPAN Certification Scholarship winner, and has served as an ASPAN Liaison.  Michelle is the current President in her local component, the 2006 Gold Leaf Component of the Year winner, OSPAN.  Michelle has written articles for her local component newsletter, “Vital Signs”, and presented a professional poster at the 2006 National Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Cindy Howe, RN, CPAN

 

Professional Experience:

 

Cindy is a Clinical Manager in the Perianesthesia Department at Pinnacle Health System in Harrisburg, PA. Her areas of responsibility include Pre-Admission Testing, Surgical Patient Processing, Phase I, Phase II and Extended Care; caring for all surgical specialties including transplant. She has 20 years of perianesthesia experience in roles from staff nurse-to-nurse manager in addition to experience as a Surgical Intensive Care nurse. Cindy is currently serving ASPAN on both the Clinical Practice and Standards and Guidelines committees, and has served previously on Membership and Governmental Affairs. Cindy is a past president of the South Carolina Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses and is the current President of the South Central Pennsylvania Association of Perianesthesia Nurses. Cindy has lectured at the local, state and national level on   multiple topics pertinent to the care of the perianesthesia patient. She is a BLS and ACLS instructor.

Laura Kling, MSN, RN, CNS, CPAN

Professional Experience:

 

Laura has just accepted a position as the Manager of the Harmar Outpatient Center of St. Margaret’s Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. Laura has practiced in PACU Phase I and II, Preadmissions, Preop and GI Recovery.  She has been a staff nurse and a manager. Laura has been active in ASPAN, as a charter member, and participating in the initial workgroup for the Pain and Comfort Consensus Guideline, Preop SPG, the Advanced Degree SPG, and has been an ASPAN ambassador.  She has also been active in her component, PAPAN, starting as a charter member, Secretary, elected to three terms on the Board of Directors and currently serves as president. She has co-chaired a state fall conference. Laura has received many honors including PAPAN’s Outstanding Achievement Award (2005), Cameo of Caring nominee (2001, 2006, and 2007) and a nominee for the Florence Nightingale Award (1993). She has presented numerous lectures on perianesthesia nursing and the ASPAN standards. Laura has also taught as adjunct clinical faculty in the baccalaureate nursing programs at Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh.

Jan Lopez, BSN, RN, CPAN, CAPA

 

Professional Experience:

 

Jan is the Clinical Resource Nurse of the PACU at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO.  She has many years of perianesthesia experience in the PACU as a clinical nurse and over 15 years in her current position.  She has been active in ASPAN committees, including Clinical Practice, Standards & Guidelines, Safety, and Publications.  Jan is active in her component, MO-KAN PANA.  She has been a board member and is the current President of the component.  Jan received the Clinical Excellence Award at St. Luke’s in 1989.

Marcelene McLure, RN, CPAN

Professional Experience: 

Marcie is the Clinical Manager for PACU and Holding Area at Craven Regional Medical Center (CRMC), New Bern, NC.  Her perianesthesia experience has spanned twenty plus years and has included post-cardiac surgery patients as well as the outpatient population. She currently publishes a nursing newsletter for the hospital as well as co-authors a monthly, approved educational article for the nursing staff of CRMC.  Marcie serves on her hospital’s Nurse/Pharmacy, Medication Management, Patient Flow, The Craven Foundation, Recruitment and Retention and the Nurses’ Week committees.  She has chaired the Nursing Council at CRMC.  Marcie is a BLS, ACLS and PALS instructor as well as an educator for graduate nurses in the care of surgical patients.  She is currently the Coordinator of ASPAN’s Management Specialty Practice Group, and has recently been appointed to the NCAPAN board for Public Relations.

Emma Pontenila, MA, RN, CPAN

  

Professional Experience:

 

Emma is the Assistant Nurse Manager of PACU at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  She has many years of nursing experience, from medical-surgical to orthopaedics and critical care, to nursing education and administration, including seven years of perianesthesia experience.  She has been very active with her local district, the PACN of Broward, where she is the immediate past president.  Emma’s leadership as chairperson has been credited for PACNOB’s successful Spring Conferences for the past three consecutive years.  Emma is also active in her hospital district committees notably the Research committee, the Clinical Recognition Program, and the Nurses Practice Council.  She is a new member of ASPAN’s Research Committee.  She has presented a research study both in oral and poster presentation at ASPAN’s National Conference in Chicago in 2005 and had several presentations at her hospital district’s Nursing Grand Rounds and Research Symposia. Emma received the Nurse of the Year award (2004) from Coral Spring Medical Center. She has published an educational article in FLASPAN’s newsletter, Airway, and will publish a research article in Breathline.

Beth Rieches, BSN, RN, CPAN

Professional Experience:

 

Beth is the Operational Supervisor of the Phase I PACU at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford, IL.  She has six years of PACU experience.  She has been active on ASPAN’s Clinical Practice and Governmental Affairs committees.  Beth is also active in her component, ILSPAN, and is currently serving as its president.  Beth is currently attending Northern Illinois University to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.  She has hopes of developing a role for an FNP in Perioperative Services at SwedishAmerican Hospital upon completion of her Master’s degree.

Wanda Rodriguez, MA, RN, CCRN

 

Professional Experience:

     

Wanda is the Clinical Nurse Specialist-PACU at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.  She has over twenty years of perianesthesia experience including clinical nurse manager of the Inpatient and Ambulatory PACUs.  She has been active in ASPAN committees including Research, Education Approver, Education Provider, Staffing Strategic Work Team, and Perianesthesia Data Elements. Wanda is active in her component, NYSPANA, and has held many offices, including State President and President of District 6 (NYC).  Wanda has presented numerous lectures on the local, state, and national level on perianesthesia and critical care topics.

Theresa Shine, BA, RN, CAPA 

 

Professional Experience:

 

Teri is a part-time staff nurse in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit and Post Anesthesia Care Unit at University Hospital’s Richmond Medical Center in Richmond Heights, OH, and a PRN staff nurse in the Same Day Surgery Units and Endoscopy Units for Lake Hospital System in Willoughby, OH.  She has 23 years of perianesthesia experience including nine years as Nurse Manager of the SDS and PAT units at Lake West Hospital (many of those years also managing the PACU and Endoscopy units).  Since 1995, Teri has been actively involved in the Greater Cleveland PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association as a board member and has held the offices of Treasurer, Secretary, President, and OPANA representative.  She has been on the OPANA Board since 2003 and is currently the immediate Past President and advisor to OPANA. Teri has also been CAPA certified since 1995.

Tanya Spiering, BSN, RN, CPAN

 

Professional Experience:

 

Tanya is the Clinical Practice Leader for PeriAnesthesia Services at Bayhealth Medical Center at Dover, DE. She has seven years’ experience as a perianesthesia nurse working first as a staff nurse then as an alternate charge nurse before entering the position of Clinical Practice Leader. As a CPL, she is responsible for clinical and educational issues in the PACU, Day Surgery and Endoscopy areas. Tanya has 25 years of nursing experience which includes emergency nursing for 13 years and she has also held roles in education, school, office, and home health nursing. She has been CPAN certified since 2003 and has acted as a coach in her departments.  Tanya serves on ASPAN’s Safety Committee and has been a component representative in the Representative Assembly.  She is also part of ASPAN’s ‘Up and Comers’ initiative.

Candace Taylor, BSN, RN, CPAN

Professional Experience: 

Candace currently works as a staff nurse for Cedar Oaks Surgery Center in Warrensburg, MO, specializing in Ear Nose and Throat and Plastic surgeries.  She has been a nurse for over 20 years and has worked in the perianesthesia specialty for nine years.  She is an active member of ASPAN and MO-KAN PANA.  Candace has held positions on numerous committees and held several offices with MO-KAN PANA including President, Member-at-Large, Education Committee, and Gold Leaf Committee.  Candace is currently on Governmental Affairs, Development, and Clinical Practice Committees for ASPAN.  She is also part of the ‘Up and Comers’ initiative as well as the Speaker Development Workshop.  Candace works with the JoPAN editors as an article reviewer. She will have chapters included in Certification Review for Perianesthesia Nursing, Second Edition and Perianesthesia Nursing: A Critical Care Approach, Fifth Edition (publishing dates pending).  In 2006, Candace represented ASPAN at NCSBN’s RN Continued Competence Panel.

Catherine Terry, BSN, RN, CAPA

 

Professional Experience:

 

Cathy is a Charge Nurse in the Surgical Access Area at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, NJ, working in both the preoperative and postoperative areas.  Along with many years of perianesthesia nursing, Cathy has obtained critical experience while working in ICU/CCU, Neonatal ICU, ER and Medical-Surgical areas.  Cathy is a member of the ASPAN Clinical Practice and Education Approver Committees.  She has held the office of President and Treasurer for her component and was instrumental in establishing the first Web site for her component.  She created and currently chairs the NJBPANA Membership Committee.  For the past several years, Cathy has been the recipient of the PACT IV Professional Advancement Career Tract.  She was a Ben Lobel Award Nominee (2006) and Department of Defense Honoree for Spousal Support “Operation Noble Eagle” (2006).  Cathy has been the nurse manager for a summer camp of approximately 250 children and counselors for the past nine years.

Professional Experience:

 

Valerie is Charge Nurse of PreProcedure Services Clinic at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, CO.  She has 20 years of perioperative nursing including PACU, Ambulatory and preanesthesia Testing.  She is the past president of the Rocky Mountain PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association (RMPANA) and currently serves as a member of ASPAN’s Educator Approver Committee.  Valerie has exhibited a best practice poster at an ASPAN National Conference on ‘Beta Blockers and PreProcedure Services’ and has provided updates and revisions for the Competency Based Orientation and Credentialing Manual.
