The American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) values the contributions to clinical care made by competent unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) in the perianesthesia environment. Dedicated to high quality patient care, perianesthesia nurses utilizing the UAP in the preoperative, postoperative and ambulatory settings must be assured that the skills and knowledge of the UAP are validated through a competency based orientation program. This manual addresses the specific critical elements of perianesthesia care appropriate for unlicensed assistants.

Core criteria for orientation include concepts related to patient rights, teamwork, communication, infection control, admission and discharge support, direct patient care within the scope of practice for the UAP, and safe patient handling. This manual can also serve as a periodic tool for ensuring that ongoing basic educational and performance skills are being met. ASPAN’s Competency-Based Orientation and Credentialing Program for the Unlicensed Assistive Personnel in the Perianesthesia Setting serves as a vital resource for perianesthesia nurse leaders and preceptors. The text also serves as an excellent guide to assist in the orientation and training of support personnel. Competent UAPs in the perianesthesia environment of care contribute to the safe delivery of care to the perianesthesia patient and family.
