Inquiring about others practice around the stir up regimen. Is your PACU's practice to dim lights once initial assessment complete and allow patients to sleep for extended period of time or do you keep lights on and do full stir up regimen every 15 minutes. Of course exceptions apply such as treating anxiety, extreme pain etc, delirium etc.

We do not use a Stir up Regimen, typically lights are on in the PACU unless a situation warrants to dim them for a specific patient. Some nurses feel having the lights dim makes the recovery experience more calm and others believe in motivating the patient to wake up with certain recoveries, especially outpatient to encourage them to discharge once criteria are met.

Interesting, I have not heard of this terminology. I like it! I would say it is really on a case by case basis. Young stable teenager or PTSD severe acute pain-"keep it calm". Someone with low tidal volumes/RR and sleepy "stir it up!"
Have you seen any tools or evidence out there?

I have had many patients with PTSD. With what you have described, I would probably be a bit more gentle with the stirring, but would ensure that they are adequately ventilating. I usually turn the lights on, but for these I don't as much. Using a soothing but firm voice seems to help. It takes practice!
