Hi There, I work at a community hospital that is discussing utilizing PACU RNs as a resource for the OR RNs for overnight cases. The discussion involves having a PACU RN called in when the case is being booked to be present for pre-op and then stay through recovery. The OR is concerned about safety as currently there is not a second RN for over night cases (there is a scrub tech and of course anesthesia and surgeon). Curious if this is the process anywhere else? Is there a second RN resource for the OR at your facility?

Huge Thanks for your insights in advance.

I have worked in numerous facilities with night call and issues. The standards state that a second RN must be present in the room during Phase 1 recovery. This CANNOT be a scrub tech!
I have utilized the OR RN. This was communicated before hand. I have also had another PACU nurse. One facility had the recovery occur in the ICU where there are many RNs.
I have also done the pre-op, waited while the patient was in surgery, then recovered the patient in the PACU with the surgical RN as the second RN.
Please refer to the ASPAN standards for this issue.
Good luck
