Do you place seizure pads on beds for ANY patient with a history of seizures? We recently had 3 patients with a past history of seizures (last seizures were 3 years, 5 years, and 15+ years). There was discussion about the need to purchase more seizure pads. Our director tasked me with discovering information on this topic. Is there a certain point where the concern for seizure precautions is similar to the general population? One suggestion was if the patient is cleared for driving, perhaps we do not need to utilize seizure pads. Or if last seizure was XX years ago? Thanks in advance for the input.

I don't know if there is a specific guideline regarding seizure pads on beds but our facility generally will put them on any patient that has any recent history, such as within a couple of years or if they are currently medicating for seizures.

ASPAN standards don't address seizure pads. In my facility we do use them on any patient with a history of seizures. Thanks! Melissa Davidson, ASPAN Clinical Practice Director

At our organization, in pediatrics, we place seizure pads on perioperative beds for all patients who have had a seizure in the past 6 months.
