What is the practice in your PACU when administering multiple doses from the same vial/syringe, where do you put the syringe/vial between doses? I have one area who will put their labeled syringe in their scrub pocket or on the computer they are working on next to the patient. I have another area who has a drawer that locks. Unfortunately meds are being left in the drawers There is also concern that everyone knows the code to get in the locked boxes. Before I ask that the drawers not be used, what are other hospitals doing in PACU?

We label and keep in at our computer (bedside) during the recovery and waster after the recovery.

We just had acrylic lock boxes added to each station for this purpose. That way, it is easily seen if someone forgot to waste.

I have seen both in our unit also. We have gotten away from the locked boxes. We have a "locked unit" and speak to keeping all controlled substances correctly labeled and within eyesight. We also include any unused doses in handoff or waste when patient is discharged from unit.

We label the vial and syringe. At the end of the patient care, we waste the remaining. Most of the staff leave it at the bedside. We do not handoff the unused portion if another nurse is taking over.
