I work in a nonunion hospital and we have call 2300 to 0700 weekdays and call on weekends evenings and nights. We have assigned (not voluntary) call schedules that we are responsible for which comes to every 5th weekend for rotating call times. Day shift does alot of the night call during the week wth the flexibility of being off following dayshift if they are called in. Evening staff is assigned partial night shift call coverage to 0200 about every 5th week for 2 nights. We have a posting area to give up and/or sign up for call shifts if we wish. We can also switch with someone. Have done this for many years and seems to work so far. Does get complicated sometimes but there is a routine to it and flexibilty with allowing switching and giving up shifts. 2 Pacu RN's are always on call together.
