I work in a Pre/Post Procedural Care area and we need to implement a Call Procedure/Policy for 19-23, Monday-Friday. I am looking for examples of what other units do in a similar situation. We are a union hospital so will need to follow some standards, but I am just looking for roughly how other units implement signing up for being on-call. We have about 45 staff members and will have about 40 call shifts to fill (M-F x 2 shifts from 19-23). My biggest concern is that we do not have a set schedules and once the final schedule is posted, we will only have 10 days until the call schedule must be posted according to our contract. What do you all do? Have any suggestions? I am all ears!

Thank you,
Nicole Riley RN, MSN

The last job that I had (I'm starting a new one on Monday), had a lot of call and was not unionized. However, what they did was divide the 40+ staff members into 3 groups. The groups were random and not seniority driven. The first group chose, then the second and third. The next call schedule, the 2nd group chose first.
This was done after the schedule was finalized. A staff member could end up working from 07-1930, be on call, then come back again in the morning. It was not ideal. The groupings of staff did help facilitate a "fairness" with signing up.
I hope that this helps!
