Professional nonprofit organizations thrive because members choose to contribute more than their dues. Stepping into a volunteer leadership role—whether on the ASPAN Board of Directors, or as a Mission Director, is one of the most meaningful ways to strengthen both the organization and your own professional path.

Volunteer leaders bring fresh perspective, practical experience, and a direct connection to what members need. Their work helps shape programs, build stronger networks, welcome new professionals, and ensure the organization remains responsive to its mission and professional community.

The benefits are personal as well. Volunteer leadership offers direct opportunities to develop career-building skills, including facilitating discussions, managing projects, shaping strategy, solving problems, and communicating with diverse stakeholders. It also builds relationships that can grow into trusted professional networks, mentorships, collaborations, and friendships.

You do not need all the answers or an extensive leadership résumé to get involved. Curiosity, reliability, and a willingness to contribute are strong starting points.
